So tonight my daddy's boss invited us to a Christmas dinner at their home. Now, I am most definitely NOT prejudice against other religions, but just to get this out in the open, my daddy's boss and his family is Mennonite. Now, if you have never met a Mennonite before, smile softly to yourself... jk jk They are amazing people, a bit different, but very.. interesting people. The women all wear dresses and little caps, basically, they dress like the Amish. The men all wear button up shirts and I saw a couple of the men with the Amish style of beard. So... the Mennonites are very... anti-technology. Like, they have phones and electricity and stuff, but NO video games, NO TV, NO radio, and all the kids are home schooled. So now that you know a bit about the Mennonites, lets get into dinner.
Probably the most awkward dinner I have EVER had... like, in my LIFE. Ever....
So we all walked in the door and the first thing I noticed was how..... uneven the house felt... like, off balance, I guess. All the girls were standing on one side of the kitchen, and a couple of the men were standing around and most of them were in the garage. (oh yeah, we had dinner in the garage...) Anyway, Bri and I walk in with the rest of the fam, sit on the couch and automatically start whispering like the best friends we are. The table in the kitchen had about 13 chairs, the living room had a small furnace and 3 couches, and the whole house was SPOTLESS... seriously... spotless... There were SO many awkward silences, and random sighs that I thought my head was gonna explode. I seriously thought about leaning over to Bri and whispering the saying about awkward silences. Yeah, you know the one. So FINALLY Denis (Daddy's boss) invited us too the garage with the men and the women who had slowly filtered in. Bri and I were giggling at every little thing. Like the fact that the girls were like... clique-y and the guys stood around on the opposite side of the room from them. The garage was HUGE and there were 3 tables that were each about 20-30 feet long decorated with plastic table cloths, candles, and sliver-wear.
There was only one other girl about my age that was wearing jeans.... and she REFUSED to talk to me. -.- seriously, I tried everything. "Hey, whats your name?" "Kayla" "Sweet, nice to meet you Kayla. I'm Sam. What school do you go to?" "Colony" "Niiice, I got to Tech." "Cool" "What grade you in?" "9th." "*nods* Imma Sophmore." "Cool" -.- wow, Kayla you're so good at talking, was this your first conversation. -.- seriously. ANYWAY, the women brought out all the food and mom realized that I had no intention to eat anything. "Sam, you have to eat. Its only polite." So mom forced us to be the first one's in line for food.... and that just added to the awkwardness.. I got the little food that I wanted (sweet potatoes!!! YUM! favorite EVER) and hurried out of line and to one of the seats.
After I finished eating, I went and stood behind mom and dad who were talking to one of the Mennonite couples. Dad asked me if I liked the sweet potatoes, and being SAM, I said "Holy Crap, yes" OBVIOUSLY "holy crap," is NOT the best thing to say around Mennonites. Mom's reaction was the funniest though. She was like, "Sam! Seriously!" And I swear, I saw her blush!! The lady of the Mennonite couple automatically said something to her 5 year old daughter. And avoided eye contact with me, I seriously got a KICK out of it. I almost couldn't hold in my laughter.
So they have a small pond behind their house that froze over with the cold. So all the kids decided that they wanted to go ice skate. I couldn't decide if I actually wanted to go skate with the other 25-30 kids ranging from ages 3 to 23 (yes, I said a kids about 23... -.- ) Some guy (I think his name was Nate) came up to me and asked "hey, you going out on the ice?" I kinda looked at him for a second and said, "Not sure. I haven't ice-skated in years." He said, "You should come on out. Its tons of fun." .... So I went out. Bri and I ice-skated for a while, and I finally got the hang of it. I literally only fell when I was getting off the ice at the end. That was the ONLY time I fell. YAY!
Over all, Bri, Mom and I were making Cult jokes and joking around (very quietly) the whole time.... and especially on the way home. :D HAHA!
So tomorrow is the last day of school before break. Today my spanish teacher showed us the most HILARIOUS video! All of us were DYING with laughter. Me and mah boys (Zac and Jacob) were laughing so hard.
Then this morning on the bus, mah Ginger and a couple of the other guys on the bus and I were talking about Fruit Cakes... SOOOO tonight at the Mennonite dinner, we got a Fruit Cake... I RE-GIFTED IT! Mah Ginger gets it tomorrow morning. haha :)
On the 17th, this Saturday, my hommie Brandon is having a movie party thing. We're all gonna go see Sherlock Holmes and then go out for pizza, I'm super excited. I TOTALLY LOVE Robert Downey Jr... SERIOUSLY! LOVE. :D
So that was my day, and one thing I am SERIOUSLY looking forward to. I hope you enjoyed reading this hecka long post! :) and I really really hope my Spanish Love song made you laugh as hard as I did! :D
